FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DOES THE THINGS IT DOES

Through the years we have had residents of the township question why we do certain things. We hope this FAQ section will help answer some of these questions. Email us with any additional questions you may have and maybe we will add your question and answer to this page!

Q: Why did you cut a hole in my roof?

A: To release heat, smoke and poisonous gases so we can eliminate some of the risks when making entry into a building or house to extinguish the fire.

Q: Why did you drop a log chain down my chimney when you responded to our chimney fire?

A: We do this to bust loose the creosote that may be hanging from the sides of the chimney flue.

Q: Why do you go into a burning building?

A: Sometimes entry is made for rescue, but most cases warrant this practice because we try to push the fire back to the burnt area which cuts off the fuel to the fire.

Q: Why, on a field fire, do you drive in the burnt areas?

A: The fuel for the fire has been eliminated, making it safer to do an attack on the fire.

Q: On an auto accident, why did you close off a two lane highway when the accident was in the ditch?

A: We do this to 1) protect Fire and EMS personnel from oncoming traffic and 2) aid in the protection of evidence during law enforcement investigations.

Q: Why did you cut the roof off of my car?

A: When we arrive on the scene of an accident, we try to access the victems' injuries by looking at the damage to the vehicle or to the internal componants of the vehicle. If there is a bent steering wheel for instance, this may have caused internal injury to the victim. If this is not the case, we do not want to manipulate the body any more than needed so as not to add anymore injury to the victim. Taking the roof off makes the patient more accessible.

Q: Why did you pump my swimming pool dry?

A: We try to find the closest water source so this frees up personnel to do the actual fire fighting. This also keeps fire apparatus off the highways which eliminates the possibility of an accident.
